Visa is the largest U.S. card network. Early 2020, Visa offers to purchase the financial technology company Plaid for $5.3 billion. Plaid provides the technological infrastructure underpinning financial apps for digital money-transferring.Plaid doesn't currently operate an online-debit network like Visa's, but merchants have viewed Plaid as a platform that could one day enable consumers to make purchases without having to rely on credit or debit cards, potentially undercutting Visa and the fees it either sets or collects.
