Vopat is a retail store operating in a state with 5% retail sales tax. the state law provides that the retail sales tax collected during the month must be remitted to the state during the following month. if the amount collected is remitted to the state on or before thee 20th of the following month the retailer may keep 3 % of the sales tax collect. On April 10, 2010 Vopatt remitted $81480 tax to the state tax division for March 2010 retail sales. What was Vopat's March 2010 retail sales subject to sales tax? answer is: $1680000.
I'm working it out wrong I keep getting the following:
81480 /.05= 1629600 so this would be for the amount if they paid after the 20th.
The amount is going to be different because they paid before the 20th so they get to recognize the additional 3 %.so I did the following:
81480 X .97 =79036; 79036/.05 =1580720; 1629600-1580720= 48880.
Here's my problem: 1629600 +48880 = 1678400 not the answer of 1680000.
what am I doing wrong?
