W3 Discussion Question 1: Cultural Analysis

Purpose:

A cultural psychological perspective is an important contribution to understanding large-scale social processes within social psychology. The analytical tools you are practicing this week will allow you to continue to critically analyze culture and its manifestations beyond this course, and may give you some insight into your own attitudes and beliefs that are maintained by the cultural "water" in which you swim.

Post (Due Friday by 11:59 pm CST): For this post, identify a cultural group that you are a member of. Remember to consider the definition of culture we are using in this course that was described in your readings and resources. Also remember to consider cultures both local and more large-scale/global in nature.

Once you have clearly identified the culture you are discussing and provided a brief description of the culture (even if you think we know what culture you mean, define/describe it in your own terms), you should then note a learned aspect of that culture. What is a lesson that is inscribed by that culture? How did you/do you continue to learn this lesson - through what kinds of processes? Support your analysis with academically appropriate citations.

Finally, identify a cultural product you think embodies the culture you've chosen (see the resource "Cultural practices, products, and perspectives Download Cultural practices, products, and perspectives"). Provide an image of or link to that cultural product. How does this product reflect your culture? How can the existence of/response to this product be explained through the process of mutual constitution?

The culture group I choose is The Hispanic Scholarship Fund. It is a portal where if you meet ethnic requirements of being latino/hispanic you can apply and potentially get scholarships.
