Warren, an employee with Maryvilles dining services, is required to prepare 200 sandwiches for grab and go lunches every day for students with a meal plan and who live on campus. Making the sandwiches involves him hand carving various meats each morning, such as Ham, Turkey, and Roast Beef. However, while Warren could initially do the job without issue, over time, his arthritis made it so that he could not hand carve the meat for more than 45 minutes without a break of at least 15 minutes. With his new arthritis related problems, Warren is consistently failing to carve enough fresh meat each morning, leaving some students upset that their grab-and-go lunches are not ready at lunchtime. Warren, fearing for his job, approaches his supervisor and asks Maryville for a reasonable accommodation that involves Maryville buying an automated meat slicer like the type used at grocery stores. The meat slicer is $3700 and requires $800 training and certification to operate, but would allow Warren to carve enough meat each morning to obtain meet the requirement of making 200 sandwiches. Alternatively, if Maryville does not buy the meat slicer, they will terminate Warrens employment for failing to meet the requirement of making 200 sandwiches. Should Maryville grant Warrens request for a reasonable accommodation, or is Maryville within its rights to deny the request and terminate Warrens employment?
