Watch the 15-minue TED on race conversations by Caprice Hollins, and consider the thought questions asked in the prompts. Question 1: Is there a way someone--who does not identify with your culture(s)--can talk to you about your culture(s) productively? If so, how? If not, why not? Question 2: What are the questions that you think we should be asking and/or you've personally wondered about? Please list at least two questions, so that others can respond directly to them. Question 3: Several students last quarter wondered where is the line was between showing respect for a culture (through active participation) and cultural appropriation. Where do you think the line is between respect for a culture and cultural appropriation? Background: As two real student examples from last quarter, and as part of an immersion experience, (a) a student attending a local Diwali festival of lights event and wondered if getting a henna tattoo was respectful of the cultural or cultural appropriation, and (b) another student attended a local Pow Wow and didn't want to buy or wear native jewelry because they wondered if it would be seen as cultural appropriation. Would you consider it cultural appropriation for someone outside a culture to uses products, styles, etc., from another culture? Question 3 isn't asking you to respond to the two real student examples above. Instead it's asking you to think about where you think the line is between respectful of a culture (cultural appreciation) versus cultural appropriation. As a general working definition, "Cultural appropriation takes place when members of a majority group adopt cultural elements of a minority group in an exploitative, disrespectful, or stereotypical way."
