Goals

To apply developmental theory through naturalistic observation of children.

Preparation

Choose a developmental stage and review the milestones relevant to that age. Welcome to focus on one domain (physical, cognitive, social emotional) or use more than one.

Observation

Spend five to twenty minutes observing children or adolescents in their natural environment, taking note of behavior that is typical or demonstrative of the stages and theories. It helps to take notes (without making the children aware or self-conscious that they are being studied).

Report

Describe the scene in paragraph form and apply the observed and children's behavior to the stage theory as much as possible - physical, cognitive and/or social emotional.
