Watch this video (you will probably have to copy and paste the address into the URL Address bar to make it work):http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MUTcwqR4Q4YLinks to an external site. The transcript is here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sn/tvradio/programmes/horizon/dr_money_trans.shtmlLinks to an external site. This is the story of DavidReimer. David was born "Bruce" - along with an identical twin brother, Brian. At 7 months of age, there was a circumcision accident in which "Bruce's" penis was almost entirely burnt off. It was 1966, and theReimer'ssought the best medical advice available. Dr. John Money told theReimer'sto raise their son as a daughter. He insisted that "she" never be told that "she" had been born male. TheReimer'schanged Bruce's name to "Brenda" and raised her as a girl. Money thought he had the perfect experiment to prove that gender was a product of environment, not our biology (genetics). He thought that gender was determined by nurture, not nature. He used theReimertwins to prove his theory of "gender neutrality." The results were catastrophic.I won't otherwise tell you how the story ends. Watch the video and find out. After you have watched the video and using the textbook (and other sources, if necessary), answer the following questions in one complete essay:
- What is the difference between sex, gender and sexual orientation?
- What is the power of DNA (genetics), and can our nurturing out-muscle it?
- Based on this story, is gender the result of genetics or environment?
- What do you make of the fact that "Brenda" was raised a girl and given female hormones ("she" was told they were vitamins), but grew up to marry a woman?
- What does this suggest about the origins of sexual orientation?
Integration of textbook terms/concepts and video material as academic support and critical thinking are key here.
Note: this is an older video thus you may hear terminology that we would not use today.

Guidelines for All Discussion Boards
A. Main Discussion Post
Discussion Boards should be written inacademic toneLinks to an external site.. Your initial (main) post should be at least 300 words but no more than 350 and must substantively integrate information from the video, the textbook readings, and at least one outside scholarly source less than 5 years old. We have all seen the video so do not write a long summary of it. In addition to the research, you may include opinion in your posting but your views must be supported (such as by the research).
Outside sources should be found through a search on Google Scholar or a NMJC Library approved search engine. You may use more than one outside source but at least one must be scholarly and the others should similarly be relevant to the discussion. For any outside source, students are required to use proper APA (http://www.apastyle.org/) style formatting only for in-text citations and reference section. In other words, because this is a DB, a cover page, abstract, etc are not required.
