Water (at 150F ) is to be pumped from a collecting tank located at the ground level. Both the suction and discharge tanks are open to air. The flow through the pump is 500 US gpm and it is located on the ground floor. The feed point to the discharge tank is 9.85 ft(3m) above the level of the suction tank. The height of the fluid in the suction tank is kept 3.28ft ( 1m) above the pump level. The section line is 5 inch-sch-40, 6.6ft(2m) long and contains 2 butterfly valves. The discharge line is 4 inch-sch- 40,100ft(30.48m) long and contain 2 elbows 90 std., 3 butterfly valves, one "swing" check valve and one gate valve (fully open). There is a filter on the suction line and a heat exchanger on the discharge side of the pump. The manufacturer of the filter specifies that there will be a pressure drop of 3psi at 500gpm. The manufacturer of the heat exchanger specifies that there will be a pressure drop of 5psi at 500gpm. The piping material is "seamless" 304 austenitic stainless steel (absolute roughness may be taken as 0.015). 1. Select the pump (determine the impeller size, power, and efficiency of the pump). 2. Check if the pump is subjected to cavitation. 3. Determine the optimum diameter and compare it to the given sizes. 4. Do you agree with specified sch. number. Fluid property: Density =(980.2kg/m3, viscosity =1.835104Pa.s) \begin{tabular}{|c|c|} \hline Fitting or valve & Numberofequivalentpipediameter \\ \hline Standard elbow 90 & 30 \\ \hline Gate valve (Fully open) & 7.5 \\ \hline Swing check valve & 95 \\ \hline Butterfly valve & 37 \\ \hline \end{tabular}
