We are trying to minimize the empty space in a 40X8X8.6 feet container when 3 boxes of different sizes are placed inside it. The dimensions of the boxes are 1.25X1X1,1X.5X.5 and 1.5X1.5X2. We have put the length, breadth and height constraints in Excel solver to find the maximum number of boxes that can be put inside the container, but found that only 1% of the container's volume was occupied by the boxes. We know that most of the volume can be filled with the boxes, but are unable to figure out what the model should be. It could be linear or non-linear, but should be solvable using Excel Solver. It will be great if someone could help with the model.
