We had been doing our training in California at the same site for about four years when we first request to produce our weeklong training in Illinois. The group that funded the event chose a university near Evanston as the site. Evanston is a wealthy area, so we went along with the choice, thinking it must be a very nice facility. We arrived on the campus very late at night and, until that moment, did not know we were being housed in the freshman dorms. Everyone was housed together — staff, presenters, and all of the 100 participants. What a nightmare! What I remember are the creaky metal beds, thin tiny towels, no hangers in the closets, and very dusty floors. It was almost like a prison — for one week. The participants were not very happy about the accommodations, thinking that we, the staff and faculty, were probably in some nice hotel with room service. When they found out that we were in the same facility, they did not feel so bad, and we all bonded over the experience in a wonderful way. Fortunately, the cafeteria and meeting rooms turned out to be much nicer. What do you identify as the issues here? Identify possible causes. What is the impact on firstly the event and secondly the participants of the event?
