Imagine you are the team leader of a department within a large hospital. What steps would you take to promote and maintain an ethical workplace? Choose one of the two scenarios below and then provide a descriptive response to that scenario. Scenario 1

  • As you are leaving your position at the hospital for the day, you are riding in the elevator with a physician, a nurse, and another bystander (whom you presume to be a patient or a patient's family member). The physician and the nurse are animatedly discussing details of a surgery that occurred earlier in the day. Although they have not mentioned the patient's name, you feel like this is information you should not be hearing, and you can see the bystander's eyes widen in surprise or curiosity, or perhaps both. You are relieved when the elevator finally reaches the ground floor. Describe your initial reaction to what you just overheard. Explain why this behavior is a violation of ethical practices. What are some lessons to be learned from this situation? Scenario 2
  • Your coworker is having some personal difficulties and lately has been having trouble getting to work on time. Your shared manager is keeping a close eye on her punctuality, which, she claims, just adds to her stress. Yesterday, your coworker asked you if you would take her name badge and scan it for her when you report to work (on time), making it look as though she also clocked in on time. You do not want to see your coworker get in trouble, but you do not want to participate in unethical behavior.
