Week 4 Exercise 8-1: Designing a Training Program
Take the results of the mini job analysis for a Medical and Clinical Technician below and develop a training process.
The five most important tasks that Medical and Clinical Technicians complete are:
- Conduct chemical analysis of body fluids, including blood, urine, or spinal fluid, to determine presence of normal or abnormal components.
- Analyze laboratory findings to check the accuracy of the results.
- Operate, calibrate, or maintain equipment used in quantitative or qualitative analysis, such as spectrophotometers, calorimeters, flame photometers, or computer-controlled analyzers.
- Collect and study blood samples to determine the number of cells, their morphology, or their blood group, blood type, or compatibility for transfusion purposes, using microscopic techniques.
- Enter data from analysis of medical tests or clinical results into computer for storage.
The top 3 Knowledge dimensions are Biology, medicine and Dentistry, and Customer and Personal Service. The 3 most important skills are active listening, critical thinking, and reading comprehension. Finally, the 3 most important Ability dimensions are Near Vision, Written Comprehension, and Inductive Reasoning.
Step 1
Conduct a training needs analysis. Using the task list you developed previously, develop a needs analysis survey that asks employees to rate how important each task is and how much difficulty they experience performing the task well.
Administer the survey to a sample of three to five employees and compute means across the employees. The survey should be administered to anyone who understands and knows the job.
Step 2
Use the task list to develop a "training checklist" where employees and trainer have to initial that each task has been taught and learned on the job.
Organize tasks in terms of their importance and difficulty, with the most important and difficult tasks given higher priority.
Step 3
Outline the training process you recommend. Who should do the training? Over what period of time? How will the trainers be relieved of their normal duties? Will there be any follow-up or verification?
Step 4
Summarize a brief report presenting the results.
