The number of calories needed can vary per individual based on sex, body size, activity levels, metabolism, etc. 1. 3,500 calories equal 1 pound (lb). For example, an individual wanting to gain weight could consume an extra 500 calories/day for 7 days and gain 1 pound in a week.
