Welcome to JMG Industries, where attention to detail shapes our world. This company motto has long been the stated ethos of the company for over 60 years, though in reality this statement is far from the current reality. JMG Industries Company History JMG industries (JMG) was founded in 1948 by Jared Mason Gregory as a small-scale manufacture of commercial household cleaning aides in Waterloo Iowa. Though an avid inventor, Mr. Gregory was not much of a businessman and his fledgling company struggled to gain a significant hold in the large-scale commercial market and was relegated to door to door sales. By 1951, JMG was struggling financially, and Mr. Gregory realizing his shortcomings, brought in a limited partner that specialized in operations and had significant contacts throughout the Midwest. Cristian Brice was the former manager of Production and Operations for The Kingsbury Toy Companys Keene NH plant, who gained fame for his ability to help transition their operations from high quality pressed metal toys to the manufacture of intricate machine tools in the midst of World War II in 1942. Though outspoken and often demanding to his subordinates, Cristians ability to manage operations provided an instant boon for JMG. By 1959, JMG had become a regional leader in the production of home innovations, such as their ever popular 6 Speed Mixer or Automatic Electric Can Opener and began eyeing a larger presence in the national market. This desire to expand, and the need expansion in the manufacturing facilities lead to Cristian uttering the famous words attention to detail shapes our world when in a heated discussion regarding the cost overruns for the new facility. Those words, and the ensuing company motto that was born from them, became a driving force of quality throughout JMG. As the years went by, the creative force of Mr. Gregory, supplemented by the operational expertise Cristian Brice, propelled JMG Industries into one of the largest manufacturer of home and kitchen innovations in the United States. By the early 1970, Mr. Gregory had begun to transition away from day to day operations and ceded control of the company to Cristian Brice in 1974. Brice continued down the path of small-scale home electronics and maintained the company place as an industry leader in quality throughout the 70s and 80s. In 1991, Cristian Brice, citing poor health, stepped down as President of JMG and promoted Winston Brooks, the current Vice President of Marketing to take over the company. The 1990s and 2000s were a turbulent era for JMG, fraught with a variety of market and manufacturing issues that significantly hampered the continued growth of the company and saw a slow erosion in the internal quality expectations enforced so stringently by Cristian Brice. These difficulties lead to multiple leadership changes and a significant degradation of the company image and culture. The continued rise in global manufacturing competition and the birth and rise of ecommerce has forced substantial changes in both operational and investor expectations. By the late 2010s, JMG still remains as a player, but no longer the industry standard, in the domestic manufacture of small-scale home electronics. With abundant competitors, both global and domestic, weaking brand recognition, and inconsistent strategic, managerial, and operational alignment, there is significant questions regarding the long-term future of JMG. JMG Industries Present Day JMG industries has just completed another change in leadership and now is headed by Payton Terrell. Payton, the great grandson of the venerable Cristian Brice, has been brought in as a last gasp effort to help reinvigorate the flagging company and attempt to reconnect to their roots. Payton, an advocate of Six Sigma and long standing practitioner of a variety of Quality Management practices, understands that the company image was based upon quality and therefore needs to begin to a full scale assessment of both the current standards of production as well as the existing culture of quality adherence at JMG before instituting major institutional changes. To begin this review, he has asked the current Assistant Vice President of Operation Madison Gilbert to provide several teams of employees for this project. Mrs. Gilbert has therefore tasked your team to investigate the operations of the Waverly, Iowa facility and provide detailed feedback meeting Mr. Terrells expressed criteria JMG Industries Waverly, Iowa Facility Waverly, Iowa Waverly is a city in Bremer County, Iowa, United States located approximately 30 miles from Waterloo, Iowa.
