Welfare Diet Assignment
Individuals on Ontario Works (social assistance) receive approximately $27.00 per week for food (Ontario Works recipients receive $216.00 per month to cover all basic personal needs including food plus $349 to cover all accommodation costs). The purpose of this assignment is to help the student gain awareness of their current lifestyle and compare it to someone who must survive on Ontario Works.
Part 1 - Keep a dated detailed journal and itemize exactly what you eat, at what time and approximately what it costs you for each item for one week. Include meals at home, drinks, snacks, restaurant meals, alcohol, cigarettes, etc. for every day for one week (7 days). You do not have to include personal items such as soap, toothpaste, etc..
For each day of your week, total the cost of your expenses and then determine the total spent for the entire week. You may use a table (such as below) in order to try and fit the information on one page, but ensure that you record ALL the information required - item, cost of the item, time of day consumed, total cost per day and total cost for the week.
Table Example:
Monday, June 28th | Tuesday, September 22nd | |
Breakfast: 8:00 am Coffee: $1.47 Muffin: $.85 Snack: 10:00 am Orange Juice $1.27 Etc... Total Expenses for Day: $ |
