"We'll be seeing you," Hyanschortt added as the two agents walked to their car. "What could the FBI want with Dregan," Gilden wondered to herself. The answer was much more complex and shadowy than she or anyone could have fathomed. Eight months prior, and acting pursuant to Section 702 of the FISA Amendments Act, the U.S. National Security Agency intercepted a phone call between Briben and a Russian hacker by the name of Vladimir Computin. The intercept occurred as part of a special compartmentalized access program codenamed GLASNOT, in which the agency recorded the content of all calls to, from and within the former Soviet Union. The program also stored the metadata of all such calls, including location information pulled from on-device GPS and through cell tower triangulation. Thus the NSA overheard Briben propose a traitorous deal. He would assist Computin in hacking into his rivals' electronic devices. He would then drop out of the race and endorse Krump; combined with ongoing Russian disinformation efforts, this would give the former prosecutor enough of an edge to pull off a near-certain electoral victory. Krump herself would be none the wiser at least until the Russian government revealed the plot, discrediting President Krump and throwing the American political system into further disarray. "This sounds , comrade," Computin said. "But what is the, how do you say, catch?" "I want to be a benevolent dictator," Briben said, coldly. "A what now," Computin asked. Although English was not his first language, he understood the words Briben was speaking. He just could not believe them. "I want to be a benevolent dictator," Briben repeated, slowly and deliberately. "That Dregan guy is so popular. I used to be popular! I was a lifeguard in 1932! A bronzed god! I don't want Dregan to win, I want to win. I want the people to love me. But it's too late for me to offer universal healthcare, blah blah blah, here. I've made my choices, cut my deals, established my lane. I want to start afresh." The NSA transcript of the call noted a long silence. Finally, Computin spoke. "I will have to check with my superiors," he said. "But perhaps we can procure some land for you, my friend. Allow me to look into this matter." "Don't take too long," Briben cautioned. "The last guy I talked to was slow as molasses in January." "I will get back to you promptly, comrade," Computin assured him. Five minutes later, Briben's phone rang. "This is Moe," he said. "Mr. Briben," Computin began, "I have been authorized to offer you Little Diomede Island, which is part of Alaska. It sits 3.8 kilometers from Big Diomede Island, which is part of Russia and is exclusively inhabited by our military. Our country could dispatch several Spetsnaz special forces units to subdue the local population, who would be yours to rule. Benevolently, of course."
