What a day at the interview! Tina, after graduating from Loyola Business School with a Business Administration degree, worked as a customer service manager in a marketing company for five years. She was looking for a move to upgrade herself. She then applied for the position of a senior executive in a public relations firm, and a multinational advertising company. Tina was informed that she had been shortlisted for the second round of interview with the general manager. On the day of the interview, Tina waited for an hour before the general manager was available to see her. The general manager arrived with another person whom he only introduced as Lawrence. The general manager told Tina that he was not going through all the formalities and will straight get into the business. He asked Tina why she thought she was qualified for the position being advertised. Before she could answer the question, the general manager came out with a string of reasons why he thought Tina was not suitable for the position. Among the reasons he cited were Tina's relatively young age, lack of experience in public relations and host of other reasons. Initially, Tina wondered if the general manager had chosen a tactic to test her responses. But when the general manager said even if she is hired, he is willing to pay only what the new recruit will be getting. It gave an impression to Tina that the general manager was completely 'clueless' about the interview. Tina had already stated in her application, her salary expectation which was what an executive with five years' experience will get. Her would be immediate boss told her in the first interview that her salary expectations were reasonable. Tina felt that the general manager did not go through her application carefully before the interview and wasted her time. Tina expressed her feelings. The General manager was embarrassed and asked her quickly whether she would be interested in another. Tina was even more puzzled by this remark than the earlier "hiccups."
