What about equity Ellen Dlamini was very disappointed to hear that her application for the position of accountant was unsuccessful. Her employer, B & Associates Accounting (BAA), a designated employer usually follows a policy to appoint and promote employees internally. Ellen thus applied for the accountant position, which would have been a promotion for her and would have provided a much needed pay increase. Ellen is a single mother who also takes care of her ailing grandmother and, with the rising cost of living, this job was just what she needed to make ends meet. Ellen joined BAA as a young black B Com Accounting graduate five years ago, first as a creditor's clerk and she was subsequently promoted to bookkeeper. She received positive performance reviews from her manager, John Edmonds, who also indicated on occasion that he believed Ellen had a bright future with BAA. Ellen recently completed her PG Dip in accounting and was planning to write the Board examinations early in the new year. BAA currently employs five accountants of whom three are white males, one is a white female and one is a Chinese male. Ellen was even more disappointed when she heard that BAA had decided to fill the accountant position with another white male. She believed that she had the necessary qualifications and experience to do the job and that in the light of equity requirements, she was the most likely candidate. The more Ellen thought about it the more upset she became and wanted an explanation. She was also no longer convinced that her future lay with BAA and thought that perhaps it was time to move on.
