Before becoming active in the judiciary, women had to fight for their rights. This battle included the right to attend law school, to be admitted to the bar, and to serve as judges. During the late 1880s, women work to change policy to gain these rights. A leader in these efforts was Myra Bradwell. Although she had the knowledge and experience from Clerk work and her husband's successful Law Firm, Bradwell was denied entrance to Illinois State Bar. At this time training occurred Via apprenticeship, not Law School. Bradwell sued, contending that the refusal to admit to the Illinois bar by later 14th amendment limits rights. Across the nation, other women were fighting for their rights. Women were said to be too gentle and tender,lack intelligence, and we're probably fit only to serve the needs of their husbands and children.
