She dropped out of high school just before graduating and had her first child when she was 19 years old. By the time she was 30 years old, she had three more children and had been involved in a series of abusive relationships with the children's fathers. Alice also had a "drug problem and had been arrested for possession of a controlled substance. She had been sentenced to probation and a drug treatment program, instead of being incarcerated, but not long after she completed probation and the treatment program, she was again running with the wrong crowd." Last year, the police raided Alice's trailer after they received a tip from a neighbor who suspected Alice was cooking meth." The police did find a meth lab in Alice's home; they | arrested her and she was eventually convicted and sentenced to seven years in the state correctional facility. At that time, three of Alice's four children were adults, | but her youngest child, her son Luke, was just 15 years old. Luke went to live with his grandmother, Marjorie. Marjorie realized that parenting a teenager at the age of 68 would be challenging, especially in light of her chronic health problems, including diabetes and | osteoarthritis, but she hoped that by providing a home to Luke, her daughter could focus on finally getting her life together. She didn't think she had misplaced the jewelry, but she also knew she could be forgetful, so she decided to let the incident pass. A few weeks later, though, Marjorie caught Luke stealing money from a small purse she kept hidden in her closet. She told Luke to give her the money and to leave the room, but he taunted her, saying, "What are you going to do about it, old lady? He then pushed her out of his way, causing Marjorie to fall, and because the osteoarthritis made her bones quite fragile, she broke her wrist and fractured several vertebrae. Luke left the apartment, but Marjorie was able to call a neighbor for help. She was taken to the local emergency room, but when asked about the circumstances of the fall, she said simply that she had lost her balance. The doctor tending to her injuries didn't ask her any further questions, nor did Marjorie volunteer additional | information. She reasoned that Luke hadn't meant to harm her. He was going through a tough time with his mother in prison, and his disrespectful behavior wasn't | really his fault; her daughter had just never taught him to respect his elders. Marjorie couldn't imagine reporting Luke's behavior to the doctor or anyone else. After all, he was still her grandson.
