I was assigned #10. What is the law of large numbers? How is that law used in the article "Confronting a Law of Limits?
The law of large numbers is explained as: "Law of large numbers, instatistics, thetheoremthat, as the number of identically distributed, randomly generated variables increases, their samplemean(average) approaches their theoretical mean." (Routledge, 2016). Basically summarized, the larger the sample size, the closer its mean gets to the average of the population as a whole. Make sense right? A sample of 100 million people is far closer to representing the entire population of the earth than 100 thousand is.
The struggle with my article is that it was through the New York Times, so I had to pay to subscribe in order to read it. I wasn't able to find a free copy of the article. In this article "Confronting a Law of Limits?" "These days, it's hard to find a superlative that adequately describes Apple. But maybe simplest is best: biggest." ( 2012). This article shows clear numbers on the fast and accelerating growth of one of the largest companies in the world. People working for Apple are anticipating that this growth simply cannot continue forever, it will get to a point where every single person and child will need to purchase an iPhone or Apple product.
"Apple is so big, it's running up against the law of large numbers.-- the law states that a variable will revert to a mean over a large sample of results. In the case of the largest companies, it suggests that high earnings growth and a rapid rise in share price will slow as those companies grow ever larger." (Stewart, 2012).
