Overall, the military is always considering the "long term mission". We were in Afghanistan for over 20 years. At the very beginning, top leaders had to have been thinking about the future and sustainability of both our presence in the country and stability of Afghanistan and its government in the years to come. However, on an individual level, some people join knowing it will be a short term thing for them. In terms of power distance, there is a strict hierarchy that is usually adhered to. When someone becomes too individualistic and deviates from that, there can be repercussions including a loss of morale to others within the organization. Generally speaking, the military thrives on collectivism, unifying everyone's goal with a common mission. Unfortunately, there can be instances of low emotional intelligence or self-awareness. Leadership can react volatilely and can damage morale for subordinates. When morale is low, it can lead to low output and complacency within a unit.
