I would tell Robert's grandparents, "I hear you saying that spanking Robert is the only thing that works for him. However, we do not participate in corporal punishment here. I would be happy to discuss with you other ways to try to help Robert have an easier time listening." I would recommend that they try redirection for Robert the same way his educators do at school. I would follow up in a few days with the family to ask them how it is going with redirection strategies, such as encouraging Robert that if he wants to climb, instead of climbing on the couch try climbing on a play jungle gym or something or the sort. If he wants to hit something maybe he can go outside and hit a baseball or a punching bag.
