What caught my eye first was when I read that Climate Change warming occurs faster in the Arctic compared to other parts in the world. There is a greater frequency of extreme weather events, and this surprised me because I assumed that the cold temperatures in the Arctic may have given them some kind of advantage, but in fact it is the opposite. I also was interested in what this meant for the ice and water. I read that climate change is expected to change the percipitation amount in rain form, resulting in an increase in " runoff of terrestrial-derived organic material from land to surface waters, leading to the browning of Arctice and sub Arctic lakes and rivers, and darkening of costal waters".( Macdonald et al 2005). This can result in toxins, and end up affecting not only the water but food chains/webs as well. Climate Change is making its mark around the world, but the Arctic seems to be getting the worst of it at an overwhelming amount. Between melting glaciers, polluted water, no temperature control, and damaged food webs, they seem to be on the fastest downhill path of any place in the world, and who knows which part of the world could be next?
