POST#1:

The Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF) has the mission of "Protect children and strengthen families so they flourish" (DCYF, 2023a). I chose this organization because it has many complex policies in place that are from the federal, state level and agency levels that affect whether or not children are safe and protected while maintaining family bonds and highlighting strength-based therapeutic interventions used.

DC YF has hundreds if not thousands of policies put in place that address all manner of steps that I social worker must take in order to work with a family. Policy 1110. Present Danger outlines the specific definition of what is considered present danger and all the different policies and procedures that a social worker must take when facing a present danger situation (DCYF, 2023b). Present danger is classified as an immediate threat to a child that requires protective actions and without these protective actions severe and imminent harm may occur to the child. This policy addresses the safety threats that a child may undergo in their lives. Present danger can happen to a child at any time and in many different situations and the child family welfare service workers are tasked with lowering present danger by increasing safety plans and protective actions when working with families and children. This policy assesses whether or not present danger is happening to a child, and it has three guidelines. It must be immediate, significant, and clearly observable to be classified as being present danger.

This policy clearly supports the mission of protecting children and strengthening families. Present danger is a very severe issue that can lead to death in a child and therefore establishing policies that are directed towards changing present danger, acting on present danger, and identifying present danger is very necessary for social workers to correctly respond when facing present danger. This over policy addresses safety positively for the most part but there have been situations in the agency where children have been removed due to present danger and the children have been further harmed outside of their home. This is an unfortunate part of the system that regularly makes the news where a child is abused in a foster care or placement situation and a social worker was not able to prevent the abuse. This is one area that needs to be worked on when looking at DC YF. Overall, this police does help children stay safe.

POST #2:

I chose to look up an agency so that I can continue to learn more about the different agencies around my area. I also chose this agency because they provide high quality, free, civil legal services and community education for people to protect their livelihoods, their health, and their families (Legal Aid Society,2015).

Agency/organization: Legal Aid Society

The mission of Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberland's ("LAS") is to advance, defend, and enforce the legal rights of low-income and vulnerable people in order to secure for them the basic necessities of life.

The legal services corporation Lsc requires legal aid society to only serve people whose household income is 125% of the poverty line or below. This is a part of LSC rules in order for the continuation of funding however, this regulation aligns beautifully with Legal AIDS mission and population. At legal aid, we prioritize those who are fundamentally at risk and who have no other options rendering us their last hope. While bleak, it provides us with an imperative mission. Having to serve those who are 125% or below the poverty line allows us to focus on those who are in dire need and who are financially unable to obtain private council. This serves our population because it creates a firm boundary for who the population is, giving strict parameters to be followed, ensuring we know exactly who out population is thus cutting out the amount of time we are spending weeding out those who are not qualified. While at times heartbreaking, this LSC regulation allows us to serve our population in ways that are not only optimally beneficial for the firm but for the mission and population we serve.
