IMPROVING SKILLS The process of delegation provides an ideal opportunity to raise skill levels in your staff and in yourself. Use it to assess staff and motivate them at all levels. Developing Delegates To allow delegates to develop their skills, you need to offer them support and help. This includes making available the resources and facilities for staff to be trained on a continuous basis, setting achievable targets, and providing effective appraisals. 87. Train your staff so that they can undertake a variety of tasks. 88. Set an example to your staff by being trained yourself. 89. Try not to underestimate a delegate's qualities. 90. Set aside some of your working week fro coaching your key delegates. 91. If people appear dissatisfied by the reward system, find out why. 92. Set realistic targets, and be flexible in case events force a change of plan. Appointing Deputies The development of deputies is a major part of a manager's task. This involves encouraging the appointment of deputies, sharing authority by promoting the most qualified candidates, and considering all means of training for potential leaders. 93. Ask a senior to keep an eye on a deputy when you are absent. 94. When appointing a deputy, announce it to your staff with confidence. Developing Yourself through Delegation You should never become so busy developing others through delegation that you neglect your own development. While the delegating process is an education in itself and will free your time, it can be reinforced through formal instruction. 95. Organize sufficient time in which to research and develop new ideas. 96. Set yourself a weekly or monthly reading plan and try to stick to it. 97. If you are aware of a gap in your management education, fill it. 98. Reinforce your skills by taking the opportunity to learn from others. 99. Develop the habit of speaking frankly to your manager at all times. 100. Ask where you want to be in ten years time, and plan your route. 101. Do not keep quiet about your ambitions - let your superiors know what you want to achieve
