What do I have to do?
Here is your scenario: B.B. Games, Inc. is a small family-owned business that makes board games for children and adults. The company was founded in 1960 by the late Bradley Buttersworth of Peterborough, Ontario, and it is now run by his son, Bradley Jr. The company occupies a modern factory in Peterborough and has 100 employees. You are the Human Resources Director for B.B. Games.
The pandemic is over, but it hit many sectors of the economy, causing a global recession. Many businesses, like B.B. Games, are struggling to reach pre-pandemic revenue levels. One issue is that fewer people are playing board games as the trend for some time has been toward online games. Fortunately, no one atB.B. Games has lost their job; however, since the pandemic, salaries have been frozen, and bonuses have been canceled. Employee morale is low as workers fret about job security and loss of income.
Your task is to increase employee morale at B.B. Games by planning an activity that will bring people together and allow them to have a good time with their colleagues. The company also also has good news to share: even though the pandemic is over, people are still engaging in the family activities they started playing at home during lockdown, which includes board games. For the first time in a decade, the demand for board games is increasing, and sales at B.B. Games are on the rise.
Here is your event planning guide:
- You have a budget of $2500 ($25 peremployee).
- Your activity must be completed within one day (no overnighttrips).
- Your activity may be onsite or offsite. The factory has outdoor space for an onsite event, weather permitting.
You get to decide how to spend this budget, and then you must communicate your plan to the 100 employees of the company.
Write a memo to the employees of B.B. Games, telling them what the company's situation is and what event is planned to give them a good time and raise their morale.
What should my memo look like?
The ideas you come up with are entirely up to you. You can use your imagination but also be realistic. For further guidance and support, refer to the "How to Write a Memo" document.
- Use the headingMEMORANDUM.
- Use standard memo format including TO, FROM, DATE and SUBJECTfields.
- Use block format, with an extra space between paragraphs, and no indention for newparagraphs.
- Decide whether your pattern should be direct orindirect.
- Make sure employees are given all the details of your plan; consider using graphic organizers for key event details (date, time, location, specialinstructions).
- Thank employees for their commitment and service to thecompany.
