What do you like or dislike about this discussion ? From reading the article that Forbes had published in 2017, it did confirm a lot of my beliefs of what makes an effective leader. There are many attributes that a leader can have, but there are some aspects of a leader that are inherent in any strong leadership.
I believe the first and most important aspect of being a leader is taking care and consideration for the people around you, and those that you are to lead. Having a strong personal connection with those around you is naturally going to have people gravitate towards you. If you are cold and not welcoming or approachable, the chances of anyone wanting to be led by you are slim to none.
Secondly, having a genuine passion for the company you work for is going to light a fire around everyone that surrounds you. Showing your commitment to the organization is a great example of leadership that others will want to follow and emulate. There is nothing worse than having a leader or manager who cares less than you do about the company you work for. From personal experience, this creates discontent and distrust in those who are to lead you. Why should a leader expect you to work hard every day, show up with motivation, and want to better the company if they do not share the same feelings?
Having a clear vision of where the company is going and how they are going to get there is another incredibly strong attribute to a leader. At times, a leader must take those who follow through times of uncertainty where a vision of the future may not be so clear, however at least having a plan of action to see through those times is going to be effective. For example, if a recession is looming and the leader at the front does not know for how long or how severe the recession may be, having a plan of action to guide through those times is going to create a lot of trust within the foundations of the organization.
There are many other traits to a leader, but I feel the above sets a strong precedent for others to follow. Without care for the people, the organization, or a clear plan, there is no direction, or anyone to follow that direction.
