What is a SWOT Analysis? A SWOT Analysis is a strategic planning technique used to help a person or organization identify the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats related to business. It is intended to identify the internal and external factors that are favorable and unfavorable to achieving the objectives of the company. Strengths and Weakness are internally-related, while Opportunities and Threats commonly focus on external, environmental factors. By combining both internal & external points of view, as well as the helpful and harmful factors impacting the company, a SWOT analysis provides a complete, and holistic snapshot of a company's current state. A SWOT analysis may be used in any decision-making situation when a desired end-state or objective is defined. SWOT analysis may be used in creating a recommendation when a company is considering launching a new product, entering a new market, acquiring a new business, long term planning, competitive analysis. Internal Factors: Strengths: characteristics of the business that give it an advantage over others. Weaknesses: characteristics of the business that place the business or project at a disadvantage relative to others. External Factors: Opportunities: elements in the environment that the business or project could use to its advantage. Threats: elements in the environment that could cause trouble for the business or project.
