What is her Accurate Diagnosis? What is the Application of Theory and Potential Treatment?
RJacklyn is a 59-year-old female (she/her) who seeking therapeutic services, at the request of her daughter, after being convicted of Driving Under the Influence (DUI). Jacklyn had no prior convictions or hospitalizations due to substances, alcohol, or other legal issues before this. Jacklyn is in tears, "I don't know what happened! This is on my record now. I'm not usually a heavy drinker!" However, you observe from Jacklyn's arrest and medical reports that she had a BAC of .13 and that she had stated to the doctors at the time she drinks approximately 6 drinks a day. You confront this and Jacklyn responds saying, "but I never drive after! But this time I had to get to my daughter because she was out of gas." You respond with empathy but reflect that the therapeutic space should remain open and honest. Jacklyn apologies and divulges she has been drinking usually 6 glasses of wine every night for the last 2 years since her husband died. "At first it was just one glass of wine a night to relax, but then it was just another glass and another glass and now it is the first thing I do when I get home from work." Jacklyn explains that she no longer socializes with her friends saying, "they judge me when I drink and say we are not in our 20s anymore. So I dropped them." Jacklyn says she tried to stop once but felt horrible sensations in her body and started shaking after a couple days and started drinking again to make it go away. Ever since, she maintains at least 4 glasses of wine each night. "I never go home from work without stopping by the store to by two bottles of wine to make sure I am stocked and don't run out. I really don't want to feel sick again." Jacklyn is secretary for a law firm and says she spends most of the day anticipating getting home and "relax with a drink" as she considers her job stressful.
