Sonia is an 18-month-old infant who has been attending an early year's program since she was 8 months old. Her mother is 21 years old and is in her first year of a community college program completing a nursing diploma. When Sonia's mother was 15, she was diagnosed with depression. She attends counseling on an infrequent basis and takes her prescribed medication for depression inconsistently. Sonia's mother has shared with the educators that her pregnancy, and labour & delivery, were very stressful processes. Sonia's father, who is 23 years old, works part-time for a computer-based company. He lives in another town, however, visits twice a month. On occasion he gives Sonia's mother money to purchase formula and other baby necessities. Sonia's father's parents (Sonia's grandparents) often offer both financial and emotional support to Sonia's mother. Sonia's father has a newborn baby with his current girlfriend. When Sonia arrives at the early year's program each morning, she enters the playroom very energetically and goes to the block area. When her mother then says 'bye', Sonia typically responds by crying loudly and motions to be picked up. When an educator attempts to regain her play and focus in the block area, she responds by engaging momentarily and then returns to crying and following the educator around the playroom. She typically remains attention with an activity for 2-3 minutes. During play experiences Sonia eagerly enters play with her peers. If a problem-solving situation is presented (such as a peer taking away Sonia's play material) she typically responds by grabbing the toy back, or by hitting her peer with the toy. When Sonia was sick with a fever last week she cried consistently throughout the day and would not allow the educator to put her down to play. When an educator holds Sonia to feed her a bottle Sonia responds by sometimes settling into the arms of the educator while at other times refusing the comfort offered. In one-on-one interactions (such as when the educator changes her diaper and sings a song) Sonia typically will engage for a moment but will then resume crying and wiggling to get off the change table. Sonia's mother and educators often say that they "cannot figure out what Sonia wants". Sonia has been visiting the Toddler Room over the past two weeks to prepare for the transition that will occur in approximately one month. Educators have reported that when she visits the Toddler Room that she is very unsettled and that she will not often leave the side of the educator to engage in play. When she does on occasion venture off to play, she often requires guidance to play in a pro-social way. At pick-up Sonia's mother will gather her belongings and go to where Sonia is playing in the playroom. Sonia runs to her mother motioning to be picked-up. When Sonia's mother picks her up she responds by arching her back to be put down. This behavior is typically accompanied by loud crying. Sonia has been observed hitting her mom during the reunion process. Sonia does not resume play upon reunion. Sonia responds similarly to educators when they return to the playroom following their lunch breaks.
