Bart enjoyed the outdoors and had often thought about taking part in one of the war games offered by a hunters' organization in his area. At a promotion meeting, it was explained to the attendees that the organization preferred to refer to their exercises as paintball games, and that a capsule with harmless paint is used as a substitute for bullets in order to indicate when someone had been hit in the course of the game. Bart decided to sign up for the paintball game to take place the next day. As he paid his money, he was requested to sign an entrance form which included a paragraph absolving the organization from any liability or responsibility for injuries suffered by the participants in the course of the game. The next morning, while preparing the paint pellets, Klaus, a member of the hunters' organization, ran out of the normal paint used and decided to substitute some paint that was on hand for the last 20 pellets. During the game, Bart was directly hit on the side of his nose, next to his eye, by Klaus, who was leading one of the opposing teams Half an hour after the game was over, Bart began to experience tingling in his eye and over the next hour lost vision in it. Analysis indicated that the pellet that had hit Bart was one of the last 20 made, using a substitute paint which was found to contain a substance that was highly toxic.
