What is your definition of positive deviance?  While answering this main question, it may help to address some of the following questions:

What role (if any) do intention and honor have in your definition?

The post should offer substantial reflection answering relevant discussion questions and relating discussion to personal/professional experience. It should also provide a correct summary of relevant lesson content and reading concepts. In reflecting on the discussion questions, the post should integrate both one current, assigned lesson reading AND one external source. A current lesson reading is one of the 4-5 required readings listed on the lesson overview for which there are guided reading questions. An external source could be a reading from a previous week, a relevant news article, movie clip, song, etc. An external source does not include the current lesson material on Canvas (neither the written lesson, any tables/figures in the lesson, nor any articles referenced by the lesson). An external source must be external to the lesson, showing that you can synthesize information and make connections from the course to the broader world. Be sure to include citation information for your sources including author, date, and a URL--at the end of your post. Finally, the initial post should conclude with a thoughtful question building on the topic or asking about a point of clarification regarding the material.

Since this discussion is set up as a "Post First" discussion, you will need to make an initial post to the discussion before you can see anyone else's work. Once your post is submitted, you will be able to review, analyze, and respond to other student work that has been submitted. If no one else has submitted work at the time of your submission, you will not see any other entries and will need to check back at a later time to see if anyone else has posted yet.

Responses

After your initial post, you'll need to respond thoughtfully (150+ words) to two of your peers' posts by Sunday at 11:59 PM ET. In order to help ensure that everyone's initial post gets at least one response, please respond to one of your peers' initial posts that has fewer than two comments. Your other response can be on other peers' posts or even on your own post, responding to a comment as part of a conversation. Besides answering the questions posed by your classmates, some suggestions for thoughtful responses:

  • Offer another framework for thinking about the post's topic.
  • Discuss further/broader/alternate implications of a classmate's ideas.
  • Compare/contrast the authors' ideas with other ideas presented in the assigned readings or forum.
  • Relate this lesson's topics to concepts from earlier lessons.
