Reflection: The school counselors in this program clearly lacked organizational efficiency and effectiveness, operational legitimacy, social legitimacy, and social and political clout. As you think about the challenges these counselors face, what recommendations would you have?

Organizational Theory: The program lacks clear goals and ways to measure success, leading to a culture of inconsistent counseling practices. To tackle this issue, I would establish clear objectives and implement the ASCA model for guidance. Creating structured guidelines, allocating resources appropriately, and providing training opportunities will improve our consistency and overall effectiveness (Dollarhide & Lemberger-Truelove, 2019).

Institutional Theory: The counseling program also suffers from a lack of operational and social legitimacy. Without essential resources like handbooks and evaluation tools (Dollarhide & Lemberger-Truelove, 2019), they rely on tradition rather than evidence-based practices. To remedy this, I would promote collaborative decision-making and involving counselors in leadership roles can address feelings of exclusion and enhance legitimacy. Advocating for appropriate staffing levels and workload expectations is crucial for addressing concerns about job security and non-counseling responsibilities.

Political Theory: There is a risk of reorganization and reassignment, causing uncertainty and anxiety among counselors. I would improve communication channels and transparency regarding decisions can foster trust and cooperation among stakeholders (Dollarhide & Lemberger-Truelove, 2019). Recognizing and appreciating counselors' contributions to the school community is vital for boosting morale and creating a positive work environment. Through continuous monitoring and evaluation, they can enhance their program to better serve the needs of the students.
