In the 1970s, the plaintiff Laura Norberg was plagued by recurring headaches of unknown origin. Her sister offered her some tablets of an addictive painkiller called Fiorinal, which helped with the pain. Eventually, he began refusing on the grounds that her pain should have subsided and that the drug was addictive.
