What strategies and tactics of influence will you develop to build a great road and help the mayor get reelected? First, decide what approach you will take. Will your strategic approach be cost related, such as staying under the budget? Will it be on differentiation, so that the mayor and the public will notice the positive impact of the modified design? Will your strategic approach be concerned with your long-term focus, so that, by doing a good job and your mayor gets reelected, you will secure future projects? Second, provide your strategies and tactics by using the seven sources of influence listed below.

"1. Let people believe that you are just like them. People respond more positively to those they think share their views and beliefs. 2. Make people feel comfortable. Use active listening - repeating back to someone what they have said demonstrates that you are listening. 3. Find out what motivates the person and supply it. 4. Allow the person to play some part in any decision-making process that affects them - even if it's only minor. 5. Highlight how special and unique the offer is that you are making to the person. 6. Remember the value of reciprocity and exchange favors. 7. People are impressed by displays of expert knowledge so find ways to demonstrate your knowledge, without showing off."
