What was a far-reaching implication of Kepler's replacing (for the shape of planetary orbits) circles with ellipses? There is no solid body whose rotation can produce an ellipse. On elliptical orbits, the planets cannot be carried on revolving spheres. Planets had to be conceived as traveling on freestanding orbits in empty space. Planets could not maintain constant orbits, but would fly off at tangents
