After operating successfully from their Wellington office for many years, the company has decided to expand its operation. Wai-Marama wants to open a second office in Wellington followed by a new office in Sydney. The Wellington main office The Wellington office, spread over three floors of a CBD office building, has two floors that accommodate the design teams and a third floor that hosts administrative and management staff. The network design for the two design floors is identical. Each floor has 15 computers arranged in groups of 5. These are connected to a floor switch with 100 Mbps Cat 5e cable. The two floor switches are connected to each other with a 1000 Mbps trunk link. The administration floor has 5 frequently used hosts, one for each of the general manager, two sales representative and two assistants. The floor provides Wi-Fi access for laptops when needed, although this is infrequently used. The meeting room has two extra workstations while the tearoom has a single workstation. Services and servers Any server(s) Wai-Marama network might need is to be setup on the administrative floor in a dedicated server room. The administration floor switch is directly connected to both design floor switches and all the servers. At the least the following services must be provided to network users: Email HTTP FTP 1 (to retrieve and upload written docs and spreadsheets as part of Wai-Marama's archives) FTP 2 (to retrieve and upload graphic documents such as design, pictures, videos) Database Payroll, finance, and human resources All hosts throughout the company access the email and database server. Each Wai-Warama location uses its own HTTP server. These servers act as proxies and provide access to the internet. Each design floor has its own FTP server. New Wellington office The new office will actually be established in Johnsonville, but will be known as the new Wellington office. It will also take responsibility for customer support and will host a small design team charged with special projects to support Wai-Marama initiatives on innovation and research. Customer support will be performed through a combination of applications. Voice services, e-mail and a web-based customer service interface will all together constitute the customer support strategy. The area is 80 m2 and will host 15 stationary workstations: 12 stations will be used for design tasks and 3 workstations for administrative matters. This location will be connected to the Wellington head office and will initially store no information on local servers. Sydney The Sydney office will be located in a building in the CBD where Wai-Marama has leased a 96 m2 to house the 20 employees who will work there. The two local servers, (a fileserver and a web server) are housed in the building server room. There is however, no connection between the server room and the office, so this will have to be installed. All local workstations will use these servers for FTP and HTTP services. For Email and Database services all clients will access the servers in the Sydney office. Communication between Wellington and Sydney must support a variety of traffic types, with significant focus given to database and email performance. Stand-alone Sydney servers for these services will not be installed unless the traffic requirements become too large for the chosen inter- city communication solution to reliably accommodate. The connection will also provide the capability to conduct in-house offsite backups. As such, FTP performance should be acceptable but this is not a main issue. Such backups, if they are to be implemented, will occur during the evening and overnight. The specifics of the connection are an open issue and an acceptable solution should be proposed. Regardless of how the access aspect of the local area network is implemented, the backbone of the new site will still be cable based. This backbone cable will connect the local router to the access point or switch along with the few local servers
