Post 1..
Hello everyone,
The New York Times posted an article on U.S inflation describing how the economy is cooling and overall shifting in a positive direction (Smialek, 2023). The article utilized several visual models to easily demonstrate inflation rates and the monthly changes in October on items the public interact with on a regular occurrence.
Chart 1 is an easy visual reference for where the inflation rates have been over a large range. It clearly displays the overall consumer price index and how it has slowed to 3.2% in the last month on a year-over-year basis. This may be misleading in some interpretations. The large range of data may lead to people attempting to predict the inflation rate based on previous years or at the rate observed in the 1980s. This chart could also lead people to anticipate the Fed's next move leading to poor financial decisions. This could be corrected by limiting the data to the last 10 years or not reflecting a month-to-month change on an annual chart.

The infographic I found was from the 2021 HIV/HCV/SUD Symposium in Austin, Texas. Taking the infographic alone it could be used to argue against gender-affirming care. It alludes to a correlation between HIV and being transgender, or as if being transgender causes higher rates of HIV. The paper is actually about how important gender-affirming care is. When transgender individuals don't feel comfortable going to the doctor and being open and honest about what risks they are taking, it can cause higher rates as well as less knowledge in general about how much risk that person is taking. It explains how when a person feels comfortable with their doctor, they are more honest and in return get better treatment. If they get gender-affirming care, they are less likely to use dirty needles and bad HRT from dealers.
Taken out of context this infographic could fuel fear in those who already don't want to understand something different. It could cause some bias and fear in seeing the causation that appears, even though being transgender doesn't cause HIV. In itself, it's not misleading, and as a whole with the presentation, it has some staggering statistics about what is happening.
