Skills essential for project managers include leadership, communication, risk management, and problem-solving. Leadership is crucial because it aids in influencing, motivating, and enabling team members to contribute toward achieving project objectives. A project manager with strong leadership skills can conducive environment for teamwork and ensure the team stays focused.

Various tools and techniques can assist project managers in managing their teams. These include project management software (like Asana, Trello), Gantt charts for scheduling, risk management tools, and communication platforms.

Project managers should utilize collaborative tools for virtual teams, schedule regular check-ins, clearly define tasks, and ensure effective communication.

When leading virtual teams across countries, respecting cultural differences, adjusting communication styles, and being mindful of time zone differences are important. For example, a project manager in the U.S. leading a team in India should accommodate the IST time zone when scheduling meetings and should be aware of holidays like Diwali, which might affect work schedules.

A project manager is responsible for the delivery of a project within budget, ensuring quality product, and making sure things are completed according to the timeline by managing and leading the project team. He/she has the final authority and responsibility in managing a project to achieve customer satisfaction (Giri, 2019). Project managers must have top notch skills when it comes to client relations, team leadership, problem-solving, time management, and communication and collaboration. Leadership ability is important for project managers because it enables them to motivate the team while cultivating a healthy work environment that empowers people to overcome difficulties and accomplish objectives. Furthermore, the use of effective tools and techniques in project management is equally significant. One of which is the work breakdown structure (WBS) which provides a breakdown of the project into smaller activities that help facilitate delegation of tasks to members. Another is a risk register or the risk log which enables identification and analysis of project risks to be used for a proper risk response plan. Other tools and techniques include the Gantt chart and Probability-Impact (PI) Matrix. Post pandemic, we have seen an increase in the need for project managers to also manage virtual teams. Project managers need to strategies that focus on establishing and maintaining effective communications within the team. Meeting schedules need to be properly set, especially when there are members who are living in other countries or continents. For example, asynchronous meetings can be conducted to ensure that only the right people attend and are involved in the meetings, making it easier to schedule the meeting. Also, electronic communication can be done if there are members in the team who are living in different time zones.
