"I would describe aggression as intentionally causing harm to someone's physical, mental, or emotional well-being. Prejudice and discrimination are forms of aggression perpetrated on others to no fault of their own. Sabates (2012), lists the types of aggression as,

"Physical assault (e.g., domestic violence), verbal assault [e.g., attacking someone's character], indirect aggression (e.g., destroying someone's property), direct aggression (e.g., ...any behavior that is aimed at the target person directly), or active or passive aggression [e.g., slapping someone or buying everyone a coffee except them]" (p. 183).

Several things can contribute to aggression including genetics, a history of abuse, high testosterone, consistent exposure to aggression, and even environmental factors.

The Bible contains many instances of violence and aggression. According to Sabates (2012), "These aggressive acts include violence committed by humans, including war, rape, theft, social ostracism, genocide, homicide, and so on, in addition, we see numerous nonphysical acts of aggression such as social exclusion (remember the Samaritans?)" (p. 185). These all share a commonality of intentional acts of harm committed against others to hurt them intentionally.

One way we can reduce aggression is to start when humans are young. "Direct your children onto the right path, and when they are older, they will not leave it" (Holy Bible, New Living Translation, 1996/2015, Proverbs 22:6). If we can teach our children the value of humanity, and coping skills for their emotions, I believe we can make a big difference in this world. Teaching them the principles of "humility with regard to our own transgressions and a willingness to repent when we offend or hurt another..." (Sabates, 2012, p. 218). As well as an open heart to forgive those who transgress them. This is one of the biggest steps we can take as a society to start to turn a corner, as well as spreading the gospel and letting God change the hearts of all generations. Lastly for this list and close to my heart, we need more counselors who are willing to walk people through healing. We live in a broken world that is not going to be whole again until Jesus comes. We need people who are willing to help others pick up the pieces and break the familial cycles of aggression."
