All throughout life people and all beings help one another, but why do we help each other or feel motivated to do so? Altruism is a motive to increase another's welfare without conscious regard for one's self-interests (Myers & Twenge, 2022). There are three different theories that describe why people seek to help others which include, social-exchange, social norms, and evolution. Social-exchange theory which is the theory that human interactions are transactions that aim to maximize one;s rewards and minimize one's costs (Myers & Twenge, 2022). This can be explained as the "costs and benefits'' theory. Take studying with a friend for example, the costs of doing this could be taking you time away, possibly not getting things done and then the costs of not doing it could be disapproving of the friend or feeling guilty. Now on the other hand, weighing the benefits could be getting things done, and learning something, versus not doing it which could be saving time and stress. The next theory being social norms, which is where we almost feel as if helping someone is necessary, we "ought" to do it (Myers & Twenge, 2022). WIthin this theory there is the reciprocity norm which is an expectation that people will help and not hurt those who have helped them (Myers & Twenge, 2022). You could think of this as the "you owe me" theory. The third theory is evolutionary psychology which consists of the kin selection, reciprocity, and group selection. Kin selection basically states, if you are family and carry my genes I will help; reciprocity describes how people can help each other; and group selection is where people work together to survive (Myers & Twenge, 2022). Personally, I believe that the social exchange theory is the most accurate to why people help one another. It is almost a natural instinct to think about "well what are the outcomes of this, what are the pros and cons of doing this", whether we act because of that or not, that is usually one of the first natural responses. For example, say one of your good friends asks you to come over and help them with something around the house, but you have quite a busy schedule, but you do not want to upset your friend, you will naturally think of the pros and cons of saying yes or no. Romans 12:13 talks about helping those who need, and being kind to strangers, it is important to remember that people might not have as much, but we are all one under God (The Bible).
