What's Worrying Americans Today? In Homework 5 we saw that in July 2021, Gallup conducted a poll of a random sample of 1007 adults from the 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia and found that 12% of them think that the coronavirus is the most important problem facing the United States right now. In June 2021, they had conducted a similar poll from which they had concluded that only 8% of adults from the 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia thought the coronavirus was the most important problem facing the United States at that time. Gallup says that these polls show that "the percentage of Americans citing the coronavirus as the most important problem facing the United States rose slightly" from June to July, 2021.1 (a) Use a hypothesis test to decide whether Gallup is correct in its assessment that the percentage of Americans who think the coronavirus is the most important problem facing the U.S. has increased from June to July. Choose the significance level that you think is appropriate for this question. Be sure to explain your reasoning carefully. (b) Describe what it would mean, in practice, if you made a Type I error in your hypothesis test. How could you reduce the chance of making a Type I error? (c) Describe what it would mean, in practice, if you made a Type II error in your hypothesis test. How could you reduce the chance of making a Type II error? (d) Is there anything you can do to simultaneously reduce the chances of making Type I and a Type II error, now that Gallup has completed its July poll? Which of these types of errors do you think is more serious in this problem, and why? Please discuss
