When examining possible types of cultures that can and do exist in a prison we can turn to page 71 and see a continuum that describes an autocratic culture on the far left of the continuum working to the far right with an empowered culture. Some would suggest that given the comparable climate of a prison environment with the military that an autocratic culture is more favored where staff merely follows a series of rules, policies and standing operating procedures (SOPs) to perform their daily functions. Others would offer that this type of culture leads to high levels of disparity and thus a movement towards an empowered culture is necessary to attract, recruit, and retain a talented workforce from current generations.
