When I first decided to get back into school and start a masters program, I started looking at the colleges in my area. I knew my work schedule was not going to change and that it would be challenging to take in person classes. GCU stood out to me because they offered a masters program online at a reasonable price (Grand Canyon University, 2022). I was also impressed that the program had such flexible start times (Grand Canyon University, 2022). I applied, was accepted, and started class in less than a month. Depending on what stage of life a person is in when they are deciding to go to school will result in different expectations a university will have to meet to attract a person to choose that university. Prospective students that are just graduating high school and going into their undergraduate degree will most likely succeed in an environment that is similar to their high school experience. Knowing that someone looking at getting a graduate degree may now be working and have a busier lifestyle may be more successful with a flexible learning environment. Using data analytics to identify behaviors of potential students from different stages in life could help a university to build programs that will best fit the needs of their target demographic. Data analytics could also be used to identify what makes a student successful in the classroom and what makes a student successful online. The learning styles are very different and require different teaching styles to accommodate such different environments. Gathering data to identify what makes a typical student successful may require data from many different aspects. After going through the Smart Book tutorial, I can see how that would be useful in understanding reading habits and tracking how many times a student may need to go over the information for the main ideas to stick (Jacobson, 2022).
