When my wife and I moved to Pennsylvania from Texas, my wife was amazed at the number of houses that did not have a fenced-in back yard! Seemingly all of the houses in Texas have a fenced-in back yard! Being from Pennsylvania, I thought nothing of it until she pointed it out. I was skeptical and so I decided to test the claim that Texas has a higher proportion of fenced-in back yards than Pennsylvania. Suppose that the proportion of fenced-in back yards for Pennsylvania is 38%. I took a random sample of 100 houses in Texas, and found that 44 of them had fenced-in back yards.
