The topic I have chosen to explore for my final project is the effects of being bilingual on ones cognitive abilities. I have really enjoyed diving into the research uncovered but I am having a difficult time figuring out the best way to build a survey that would best measure cognitive abilities that still aligns with ethical requirements and will not interfere with validity and reliability.

Many of the resources I have explored have indeed found improved cognitive abilities such as memory, auditory senses, and problem solving. For example, the article by Yang (2017) have found the advantage of working memory to be linked to being bilingual through multiple cognitive tests, which is where the difficulty arises. Testing cognitive abilities is a difficult tasks at hand and trying to determine the best survey increases the difficulty.

The aspect of my final project that I find particularly challenging is the potential for confounding variables and the nuanced interpretation of correlation. The research question, "Does the amount of time spent on social media platforms correlate with individuals' reported levels of anxiety and depression symptoms?" is complex due to the multitude of factors that could influence the relationship between social media use and mental health.

Identifying and controlling for confounding variables poses a significant challenge. Various factors such as pre-existing mental health conditions, life events, and socio-economic status can influence both social media usage and mental health outcomes. Ensuring that the observed correlation is not merely a result of these third variables requires careful consideration and sophisticated statistical analyses.
