When reviewing the CPA's code of ethics for supervision this sentence caused me pause: "TheseGuidelinesdo not specifically address situations in which psychologists supervise non-psychologists, or where psychologists are supervised by non- psychologists" (CPA, 2017, p. 5).

Given the legal importance of guidelines, I would assume psychotherapist or counsellors would either explicitly be covered in the CPA's Guidelines or have their own guidelines. I feel like there is insufficient protection for sensitive ethical issues around the supervisor-supervisee relationship as it relates to psychotherapists and counselors. Furthermore, a"non-psychologist" is not defined and theoretically could refer to any profession other than psychologist.

Questions:

Do you think psychotherapists and counselors should have a unique set of Guidelines or be rolled into the CPA with amendments to explicitly note the titles of psychotherapists and counselors?

Just as the roles between psychologists, psychiatrists, psychotherapists, and counselors differ, should their ethical considerations in the supervisor-supervisee role differ too? (ex.CPA supervisionskillsinclude "maintaining a working alliance; observing, evaluating, and gatekeeping; supporting; providing constructive feedback; facilitating self-evaluation; instructing; modelling; mentoring; and mutual problem solving." CPA 2017, p. 5). Can you think of an area of ethical concern under the supervisor-supervisee relationship that is unique to psychotherapists and counselors?

Is there a particular role you would like your future supervisor to assume? (Mine is mentor)
