Indeed, Donald Trump campaigned on a narrative that the U.S. is being treated very unfairly in the global trade regime, and that the U.S. needs to raise tariffs against countries that it determines are taking advantage of the global trading system. After it took power, the administration raised tariffs on steel and aluminum, began renegotiations of NAFTA leading eventually to the USMCA, and imposed tariffs on washing machines, among other steps. These all have various implications for global supply chains. These policies and tariffs have remained largely unchanged by the Biden administration.
