When we calculate questions regarding PERT/CPM, we use the mean critical path to calculate the probability of completing the project by the deadline.

In reality, each activity duration is a random variable. As each activity duration is uncertain, the critical path is also uncertain. How can we calculate the probability of completing the project by the deadline if we treat the critical path as a random variable (and not use the mean critical path)? Which distribution should we use?
